Which Fiji Destination To Holiday?
Denarau is known for luxury resorts, family-friendly facilities, and island cruises, while Wailoaloa offers a more relaxed beach atmosphere with budget-friendly hotels, local restaurants, and nightlife.
The good news is that both are close to Nadi International Airport, making them ideal bases for first-time visitors to Fiji. Needless to say choosing between them depends on your travel style, budget, and what kind of Fiji experience you want.
Where Are Denarau and Wailoaloa Located?
Denarau Island is a small island connected to mainland Nadi by a short causeway. All vehicles passing through pass a gate with security. It is located about 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport and is home to many of Fiji’s luxury resorts and Port Denarau Marina. It’s from this marina that you’ll board for Mamanuca and Yasawa Island Resorts and day trips.
Wailoaloa is located along the mainland coastline near Nadi Airport, only around 10–15 minutes from the airport. It is famous for its long beach, local bars, backpacker scene, and relaxed atmosphere.

Denarau Island Resorts
Denarau Island is Fiji’s luxury resort hub and home to many renowned hotel chains with some featuring golf courses, spas, shopping areas and minutes from Port Denarau Marina. If you’re planning to stay on land and going on offshore excursions in the morning and back in the afternoon, staying in Denarau is the most convenient.
Popular Denarau resorts include:
- Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa
- Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa
- Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort
- The Terraces
- The Palms
- Radisson Blu Resort

Denarau is especially popular with:
- Families: Best family-friendly resort in Denarau is Radisson for its waterslide and big lagoon pool that no other Denarau resorts can match.
- Luxury travelers: Sheraton Villa Denarau and Sofitel tops the list for luxury travelers.
- Honeymooners: Sofitel Denarau has an adults-only pool more intimate than other Denarau resorts though this is an extra charge that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
- Cruise passengers: Perfect stay for itineraries to day trips such as South Sea Island (30min), Savala Island, Kadavu Lailai in the Mamanuca Group and Castaway Island, Kuata Island and Manta Ray in the Yasawa Group.
- Travelers wanting easy island transfers: Hop-on Hop-off boat are perfect for adventurous travelers who want to taste a sample of different islands.
Adults-Only Resorts Near Denarau
There is no adults-only resort in Denarau though some features adults-only areas. Fully adults-only luxury resorts can be accessed easily via island transfers from Port Denarau.
Popular adults-only Fiji resorts near Denarau include:
- Likuliku Lagoon Resort: Likuliku has the best overwater bungalow in Fiji.
- Tokoriki Island Resort: Tokoriki has one of the most amazing beaches and books out fast.
- Tropica Island Resort: Tropical resort has only 18 rooms and newer with diving and snorkeling facilities. Scuba divers should check it out.

Wailoaloa Beach Resorts
Wailoaloa offers a very different atmosphere compared with Denarau. Instead of gated luxury resorts, Wailoaloa has a more laid-back beach town feel with local restaurants, casual bars, backpacker accommodation, and affordable hotels. Think of Bali. Wailoaloa is as close to Bali as it gets for tourists.
Popular accommodation options in Wailoaloa:
- Aquarius On The Beach
- Crowne Plaza Fiji (Best Luxury)
- Beach Escape Resort
- Wyndham Garden (Best Modern)
- Ramada Suites (Best Couple)
- Smugglers Cove Resort (Best Backpacker & Solo Traveler)
Wailoaloa is best suited for:
- Budget travelers: Wyndham Garden, Ramada Suites are the next two best upper-mid budget hotels if Denarau resorts are too pricey. Tip: Coach transfers to and from Port Denarau stops in front of Ramada. All Wailoaloa tourists will come here to hop on and off then walk to their respective hotels.
- Backpackers: Bamboo Beach, Aquarius, Beach Escape Resort and Blue Water are go-to for budget travelers in Fiji. They have dorms for solo travelers too. Bamboo Beach Resort is the best backpacker resort for being close to Wailoaloa beach.
- Solo travelers: For the most affordable solo travelers to Fiji should go for Bamboo Beach but can’t go wrong with Beach Escape and Blue Water Lodge for their swimming pool. Beach Escape has a cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner so it’s all an all-rounder. I loved their tropical smoothie (they used real fruits).
- Younger travelers: Wailoloa is more suited for younger couples than Denarau for its affordably and relaxed beach vacation vibes. The night is more bustling and yes, it’s safe to walk at night.
- Nightlife lovers: Travelers wanting nightlife and fun vibes would like Wailoaloa more. Try the burgers and pizza at the Wailoaloa Beach Club. Do note they are cashless – only credit cards and M-Paisa accepted. M-paisa is Fiji’s digital wallet for storing, sending and paying money to peers and shops.

Is Denarau Better for Family Vacation than Wailoaloa?
Denarau is usually the better option for families traveling to Fiji. Most resorts have:
- Kids clubs
- Family pools
- Water activities
- Large rooms and villas
- Resort restaurants
- Easy transport options
Family-friendly resorts like Radisson Blu Resort and Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa are especially popular with Australian and New Zealand families while Softel Resort and Sheraton Resort are top choices for American and Canadian travelers.
Wailoaloa itineraries can still work for families on a budget, especially for short stays near the airport, but it does not have the same level of family resort facilities as Denarau. Crowne Plaza is the best family-friendly resort in Wailoaloa Beach for its multiple swimming pools and kids clubs.
Is Denarau Good for Couples?
Stay in Denarau if you want luxury resorts to remember, spa treatments, romantic dinners, day cruises, Mamanuca and Yasawa resort transfers and quiet resort atmosphere. Older couples with solid retirement plans might like Denarau more as uncharges adds more glam and relaxation.
Choose Wailoaloa if you want casual beach bars, budget stays in Fiji, sunset nightlife and social atmosphere. Younger and adventurous type of couples may like Wailoaloa more.

Tip: Many travelers actually combine both destinations during one Fiji holiday. Spend a few nights in Wailoaloa for nightlife and local experiences before moving to Denarau for luxury resorts and island cruises.
