What Does “Visa-Exempt” Actually Mean?

If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country, you do not need to apply for a visa at an embassy or online before you fly. Instead, upon arrival at Nadi or Nausori International Airport, you will be granted a Visitor Permit automatically.

+ Duration: This permit is typically valid for up to 4 months.
+ Cost: There is no fee for this initial 4-month permit on arrival.
+ Purpose: This is strictly for tourism, visiting family/friends, or short-term study. It does not allow you to work or start a business of which you’ll need a different permit.

Fiji’s international airport is the Nadi Airport located in Nadi which the biggest tourist hub and the entry/exit point for most travellers.

Relevant Fiji Work Permits

Citizens of the following countries are not required to obtain a Fiji visa when travelling to Fiji. However, these travellers will still need the relevant permits depending on the nature of their travel. You’ll need to apply for the correct permit to: work, invest, study, reside with principal applicant, reside as Yachter, reside on medical purpose and/or reside in Fiji with assured income.

Australian Tourists Visiting Fiji

For Australian tourists heading to Fiji, you don’t need to apply for a tourist visa in advance. Upon arrival, you’ll automatically be granted a free visitor permit valid for up to four months. However, you must make sure your passport has at least six months of validity left from your date of entry, and you’ll need to show proof of a return or onward flight ticket alongside your resort accommodation details. 

You will also need to complete an arrival declaration card, so pay special attention to Fiji’s strict biosecurity rules where any food, plants, or organic items must be declared immediately to avoid hefty fines. 

Lastly, remember that a visitor permit strictly prohibits working or conducting business, but as long as you’re there to relax on the beach and enjoy the island hospitality, getting through border control is a quick and welcoming process.

New Zealand Tourists Visiting Fiji

For New Zealand travellers heading to Fiji, Kiwis receive an automatic, free four-month visitor permit right upon arrival. To ensure a seamless entry, make sure your New Zealand passport is valid for at least six months past your travel date, and have your return flight details and accommodation bookings ready to show immigration officials. 

United States Tourists Visiting Fiji

Entering Fiji is hassle-free because US passport holders do not need to apply for a visa in advance. You’ll automatically receive a free tourist visitor permit valid for up to four months. To ensure a smooth entry, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months past your departure date and that you have printouts or digital copies of your confirmed return ticket and resort booking. 

Canadian Tourists Visiting Fiji

For Canadian visitors, travelling to Fiji is wonderfully simple because you don’t need to apply for a tourist visa before leaving home. When landing at Nadi International Airport, Canadian passport holders are granted an automatic, free visitor permit valid for up to four months. Just make sure your Canadian passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your arrival date, and have proof of your return flight and hotel bookings handy for immigration officials.

Mainland China Tourists Visiting Fiji

For mainland Chinese tourists, visiting Fiji is easy because of a mutual visa-exemption agreement, meaning ordinary passport holders do not need to apply for a tourist visa before leaving China. Upon arrival at Nadi International Airport, you will automatically be granted a free tourist visitor permit for up to four months. To ensure smooth border clearance, make sure your Chinese passport is valid for at least six months past your entry date, and have printed or digital copies of your confirmed round-trip flights, hotel reservations, and proof of sufficient funds ready to show immigration officers. 

Hong Kong Tourists Visiting Fiji

For travelers visiting from Hong Kong, entry into Fiji is straightforward because Hong Kong SAR passport holders do not need to apply for a tourist visa in advance. You’ll be granted a free visitor permit for up to four months when landing in Nadi. To make sure border control goes smoothly, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your departure date, and keep printed or digital copies of your return flight ticket and resort bookings ready to present.

Step 3: Fiji tours and day trips are in demand with limited spaces. It’s wise to book via Viator, GetYourGuide or Klook to reserve your spot especially for big groups. Book travel e-sim, travel insurance and hotel transfer for smooth holiday.

Step 4: List your travel essentials and pack accordingly.

Step 5: Check-in online if available and be at the airport 3 hours early.

Step 7: If required there are money exchanges in the baggage claim area (right side) and the arrival area (left side). There’s also a currency exchanger in the departure hall to exchange back FJD to tour local currency before your flight back.
