The Flight: Nadi to Taveuni (Matei)
To start your journey, you will fly from Nadi (NAN) to Matei Airport (TVU).
- Airlines: Fiji Link (Fiji Airways) and Northern Air.
- Availability: Flights are available 7 days a week
- Schedule: Typically 3–4 flights daily, with the most popular being the 7:30 AM (getting you to the island for lunch) and the 1:30 PM departures.
- Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes of breathtaking views over the Bligh Waters.
Day 1: Arrival & The Time Traveler’s Landmark
- Morning: Land at Matei Airport. The Garden Island Resort team will meet you for the 15-minute coastal drive to the resort in Waiyevo.
- Lunch: Settle into your ocean-front room and have lunch overlooking the Somosomo Strait.
- Afternoon: Standing in Two Days. Walk or take a 2-minute taxi to the 180th Meridian / International Dateline. Taveuni is one of the few places on earth where you can jump between “today” and “yesterday.”
- Evening: Visit the Wairiki Catholic Mission, a stunning stone church built in 1907. If you are here on a Sunday, the choral singing is world-class.
Day 2: The Rainbow Reef (Soft Coral Capital)
- Morning: Board the dive boat directly from the Garden Island Resort pier. You are only 10–15 minutes away from the Rainbow Reef.
- Activity: Whether you are a diver (The Great White Wall) or a snorkeler (The Cabbage Patch), the soft corals here are legendary. The nutrient-rich currents create a “feeding frenzy” of color that you won’t find anywhere else in Fiji.
- Afternoon: Return to the resort for a “Nature Spa” treatment to soothe your muscles after a morning in the ocean.
Day 3: Vidawa Rainforest Hike (The Lavena Alternative)
- Full Day Trip: Vidawa Forest Walk.
- Why this? Instead of the flat Lavena coastal walk, this is a deep-jungle adventure. Your local guide will take you through the Bouma National Heritage Park, teaching you about Fijian herbal medicine and ancient fortified village ruins.
- The Reward: The hike concludes at the Tavoro (Bouma) Waterfalls. You’ll emerge from the jungle at the top falls and work your way down to the bottom pools for a refreshing swim. It is a more challenging but infinitely more rewarding trek.
Day 4: Vuna Blowholes & The Southern Tip
- Morning: Head to the southern end of the island to witness the Vuna (Matamaiqi) Blowholes.
- The Spectacle: On a high tide, the ocean crashes into volcanic rock tunnels, shooting geysers of water up to 50 meters into the air. It’s a raw, powerful display of nature that feels worlds away from the calm resort beaches.
- Afternoon: Visit Bobby’s Farm for an organic tour of Taveuni’s incredible produce—from cocoa and vanilla to exotic tropical fruits.
- Evening: Enjoy a final “Kava Ceremony” at the resort with the staff.
Day 5: Birdwatching & Departure
- Early Morning: Take a 4WD trip up to Des Voeux Peak. This is the third-highest mountain in Fiji and a sanctuary for the rare Orange Dove and Silktail. If the weather is clear, you can see all the way to Lake Tagimoucia.
- Check-Out (11:00 AM): Enjoy a final tropical breakfast at the resort’s Drodrolagi Restaurant.
- Flight Home: Most return flights to Nadi depart in the mid-morning or late afternoon. Take the 3:30 PM flight to catch the late afternoon light hitting the reef systems as you fly back to Nadi.
Garden Island Resort: Quick Tips
- Cashless: Like many Taveuni resorts, Garden Island is a cashless property. All charges go to your room; however, bring FJD cash for the Bouma National Park entry fees ($50 FJD) as they do not accept cards.
- Dive Ready: The resort is a PADI 5-star facility. If you aren’t certified, Day 2 is the perfect time to try a “Discover Scuba” session.
- Packing: Taveuni is the “Garden Island” for a reason—it rains often! Bring a lightweight rain jacket and high-quality insect repellent for the Vidawa hike.
