Fiji Scuba Diving Trip 2027 Guide

Scuba dive in Fiji to see magnificent biodiversity and the best soft coral diving in the world.

Scuba diving in Fiji is about as close as you can get to stepping into a real-life nature documentary. Yes, really!

Warm, crystal-clear ocean currents nourish these waters, creating vibrant purple, pink, and yellow soft corals that pulse with life the moment the tide begins to roll.

What makes dipping beneath the surface here so extraordinary is the sheer diversity of the marine life.

Fiji’s waters are home to more than 1,200 species of fish, over 300 types of hard and soft coral, and 5 of the world’s 7 sea turtle species.

Whether you are drifting along Taveuni’s famous Great White Wall which is a dazzling drop-off blanketed in luminous white coral or gliding alongside gentle reef manta rays in the Yasawa Islands, every dive feels like discovering a whole new world. Taveuni is more hardcore I would say. I recommend staying at Maravu Lodge which is a relatively affordable accommodation in Taveuni especially when Taveuni is known to have luxury resorts.

For those that want to stay in Viti Levu and still scuba dive try scuba diving at Beqa Lagoon. Thrill-seekers can experience heart-pounding shark dives at Beqa, often seeing up to eight species of sharks in a single dive, including majestic bull sharks and tiger sharks patrolling the deep. For this scuba diving, stay at Pearl Resort or the more luxury Nanuku Resort for couples.

Yet, with year-round water temperatures averaging between 25°C and 28°C (77°F to 82°F) and visibility frequently stretching up to 30 meters (100 feet), even gentle, shallow lagoon dives offer effortless bliss for beginners and macro enthusiasts alike.

The Pearl Resort below at Pacific Harbour, Viti Levu is a perfect launch pad for Beqa shark diving near the Aqua Trek base.

For many foreign scuba divers, you’ll be arriving in Fiji through Nadi Airport then onto local islands such as Taveuni and Kadavu.

Getting to these islands requires a domestic flight which flies a couple of times per week from Nadi. However, if you can’t connect your domestic flight in time it’s best to stay in a hotel near Nadi airport for a night to refreshen up from jetleg. After all, you’d want to be in the best physical shape and strength when scuba diving.

I would recommend to stay a couple of days in Denarau or Wailoaloa and hop onto a day trip to the Mamanuca Islands for some snorkeling then onto other islands with more hardcore scuba diving spots. Consider travel insurance as scuba diving is a risky activity for newbies.

What’s the best time to scuba dive in Taveuni

The best time to scuba dive in Taveuni especially for exploring the Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall is during the dry season from April to October.

The absolute peak window falls between May and September, when underwater visibility reaches its highest levels, frequently stretching from 20 to 40 meters (65 to 130 feet). During these months, topside weather is drier and cooler, with water temperatures comfortably hovering around 26°C to 27°C (78°F to 79°F).

Although diving is available year-round, visiting during the warmer, wet season from November to April means encountering higher water temperatures around 28°C to 29°C (80°F to 82°F), slightly lower visibility ranging between 12 and 30 meters (40 to 100 feet), and a greater chance of tropical rain showers.

Beyond choosing the right month, timing your dive around the daily tidal currents in the Somosomo Strait is equally important, as these nutrient-rich flows cause the iconic soft corals of the Great White Wall to fully open and bloom.

While some diving resorts are mentioned in the Hotel Booking page, here are the top 10 scuba diving sites in Fiji, expanded with the best resorts to stay at for each diving site in Fiji:

1. The Great White Wall (Somosomo Strait)

Best for: Advanced divers (due to depth and currents)

The Great White Wall is covered in white soft corals that look like a snowy mountain cliff. Because it’s in the Somosomo Strait, staying on Taveuni or nearby Vanua Levu is a must.

Garden Island Resort: Renowned for its professional dive shop and ocean-view rooms overlooking the strait.

2. Rainbow Reef (Somosomo Strait)

Best for: All levels

Rainbow Reef is next door to the Great White Wall reef system which includes dozens of sites bursting with multicoloured corals.

+ Sau Bay Resort & Spa: A secluded eco-luxury retreat located on the edge of the Rainbow Reef
+ The Remote Resort: An ultra-private luxury option located directly on the Rainbow Reef coastline.

3. Namena Marine Reserve

Best for: Advanced divers

A high-voltage dive site where grey reef sharks, hammerheads, and massive schools of barracuda congregate.

+ Namale Resort & Spa: An ultra-luxury, all-inclusive resort (owned by Tony Robbins) with its own PADI 5-star facility.
+ Koro Sun Resort: Nestled in a rainforest setting, offering easy boat transfers to the Namena reserve.

4. Beqa Lagoon

Best for: Adrenaline seekers (Certified divers only)

The ultimate shark encounter. You’ll sit on the sandy bottom and watch Bull sharks, Tiger sharks, and Lemon sharks in a controlled, exhilarating feed.

+ Beqa Lagoon Resort: Located on Beqa Island itself, providing the most immersive “shark-centric” experience.
+ The Pearl South Pacific Resort: A modern mainland resort in Pacific Harbour, perfect for those who want shark dives by day and upscale dining by night.
+ Nanuku Resort: A luxury villa-style resort on the mainland that offers high-end private dive charters to the lagoon.

5. Mellow Yellow (Bligh Water)

Best for: Intermediate divers.

A pinnacle so densely covered in yellow soft corals that the reef itself seems to be glowing.

+ Volivoli Beach Resort: (Again, the top choice here due to proximity and their custom-built dive boats).
+ Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel: A great budget-friendly option in the Suncoast area that works with local dive operators.
+ Dreamview Villas: Great for group travelling on a mid-budget.

6. Mamanuca Islands

Best for: Intermediate divers and those staying near Nadi.

Fiji’s most famous “easy” shark dive, perfect for beginners or those staying near Nadi.

+ Castaway Island: Features a 5-star Gold Palm dive center and is minutes away from the top Mamanuca sites.
+ Vomo Island Resort: Luxury diving at its finest; you get personalized service and a highly professional dive team.
+ Tokoriki Island Resort: An award-winning adults-only resort with an excellent PADI facility on-site.

7. Manta Reef (Kadavu)

Best for: Manta ray lovers

A specialized cleaning station where you can dive or snorkel with resident Manta Rays year-round.

+ Oneta Resort: A small, family-run eco-resort that offers a very personal, “off-grid” diving experience.

Want to surf in Fiji? Discover surfing locations in Fiji. When transferring to other islands from Nadi airport, the timing of arrival and departure may not be enough so in this case it’s better to stay in a layover hotel in Nadi such as Gateway Resort.
