Travel Insurance Offerings
When booking travel, protecting your investment is just as important as booking the flights or accommodation itself.
There’s two primary tiers: the Vacation Package Travel Plan and the Post-Departure Travel Plan. This gives travelers like me options depending on whether they need comprehensive coverage before and during their trip, or just protection once they are already on the road.
Tier 1: The Vacation Package Travel Plan
The Vacation Package is designed for comprehensive peace of mind. This plan covers both pre-trip and in-destination risks.
It is ideal for travelers booking major upfront expenses like flights, hotels, or complete vacation packages who want total financial security from the moment you book until you return home.
+ Trip Cancellation: Covers up to 100% of the trip cost, safeguarding your investment if unexpected events force you to cancel before departure.
+ Emergency Medical Expenses: Provides up to $50,000 in coverage, ensuring you aren’t financially devastated by sudden medical emergencies abroad.
+ Baggage & Personal Effects: Offers up to $1,500 to protect your luggage, gear, and personal belongings against loss or damage.
Tier 2: The Post-Departure Travel Plan
This budget-friendly post-departure travel plan focuses entirely on unexpected disruptions and medical needs once the journey has already begun.
+ Trip Interruption: Covers up to 100% of the trip cost if your travels are cut short due to covered emergencies.
+ Emergency Medical Expenses: Provides up to $10,000 for immediate medical attention while away.
+ Baggage & Personal Effects: Includes up to $500 for basic coverage of your personal belongings during transit and travel.
Which Travel Insurance Should I Get?
If you are booking high-cost itineraries, multi-destination bookings, or expensive gear (like scuba equipment or electronics), the Vacation Package plan provides the necessary medical and baggage limits. For shorter or lighter trips, the Post-Departure plan offers an affordable baseline of security.
Travel Insurance to get for different Locations
+ Visiting Fiji’s Denarau Island with family or a honeymoon, Suva or simply transiting through Fiji, post-departure travel plan is acceptable. Choose Vacation Package however if your budget allows or you need a full sense of security. This is because Denarau Island has relatively easy access to good medical facilities compared to the rest of Fiji.
+ Visiting Fiji’s Mamanuca, Yasawa Islands, Savusavu, Taveuni or going on day trips, Vacation Package plan is the best and honestly the only option you should go for since there is a lack of good medical facilities and if something serious were to happen, you’d need to call a medical helicopter or charter fast hospital boat.
+ Visiting Fiji’s Wailoaloa Resorts, the post-departure travel plan is a good option to budget low.
+ Visiting Australia, if you book tickets to Sea Life Sydney Aquarium and Taronga Zoo a post-departure travel plan is fine but tickets for Philip Island Penguin Parade, Blue Mountains and whale watching in Sydney, the Vacation Package is better.
+ Visiting New Zealand, the tickets booked for Hobbit movie set tour and Auckland based attractions generally can suffice with post-departure travel plan. Definitely get the Vacation Package for glacier and mountain tours after booking.
+ Visiting Singapore, post-departure travel plan is acceptable if book Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Oceanarium Ticket and Marina Bay Sands Skypark. However, for vacation on a 4-day Disney Cruise or the Singapore River Cruise the Vacation Package is recommended.
+ Visiting Hong Kong, post-departure travel plan is generally acceptable for light itineraries like visiting museums and Disneyland. Those going to Ngong Ping, Scenic Bus, Peak Tram and Hong Kong Harbour Cruise might want the Vacation Package for peace of mind.
FAQ on Travel Insurance to Asia-Pacific Destinations
1. What is the main difference between the Vacation Package Travel Plan and the Post-Departure Travel Plan?
The primary difference is Trip Cancellation coverage. The Vacation Package Travel Plan (starting at $35.00) includes 100% trip cancellation protection before you leave, along with higher medical ($50,000) and baggage ($1,500) limits. The Post-Departure Travel Plan (starting at $21.00) only kicks in after your trip begins, focusing on trip interruption, lower medical ($10,000), and basic baggage ($500) coverage.
2. Do Trip.com travel insurance plans have a deductible?
No. Both exclusive Trip.com insurance plans feature a zero-deductible ($0) structure. This means if you have a covered claim, you do not have to pay any out-of-pocket minimums before your insurance benefits apply, allowing you to receive the full eligible payout.
3. How much emergency medical coverage do these plans provide?
The amount of medical coverage depends on the plan you choose:
