Fiji is widely regarded as a world-class destination for surfing, anchored by deep-water reef passes that convert massive southern ocean swells into powerful, clean waves. Access to all surf breaks in Fiji is open to everyone, allowing visitors to explore waves across the archipelago freely.

General Fiji Surf Conditions & Seasonality

Fiji experiences two primary surfing seasons, though waves can be found year-round.

+ The Winter / Peak Season (May to October): This is the premier time for experienced surfers. Low-pressure systems in the Southern Hemisphere (near Australia and New Zealand) generate consistent, heavy, and long-period groundswells. Waves regularly range from head-high to triple-overhead. During these months, the Southeast trade winds blow consistently.

June is peak winter swell season in Fiji. Deep low-pressure systems in the Southern Hemisphere consistently send overhead-to-triple-overhead groundswells straight toward Fiji’s southern and western reefs.

+ The Summer / Off-Peak Season (November to April): Swells are generally smaller, shorter in period, and come from northern tropical depressions. This season offers warmer water, glassier conditions, and lighter winds—making it ideal for beginners, intermediates, or those who prefer shorter paddles and user-friendly waves.

+ The Tide Factor: Virtually all of Fiji’s surf breaks are barrier reef passes. Waves break over sharp, shallow coral reefs rather than sand. Because of this, many spots are highly tide-sensitive; they can transition from world-class waves at mid-to-high tide to dangerously shallow, dry coral at low tide. Pack reef booties.

Primary Surfing Locations in Fiji

1. The Mamanuca Islands

Located just off the west coast of the main island (Viti Levu), this is the undisputed heart of Fijian surfing. Because of the geological angle of the islands, the strong winter Southeast trade winds blow offshore here, grooming the wave faces into clean, hollow barrels.

+ Cloudbreak: A legendary, heavy left-hander that breaks on an outer reef. It can hold size from 2 feet to 20+ feet and is strictly for advanced surfers when a real swell hits.

+ Wilkes Pass & Namotu Lefts: More forgiving options in the chain. Wilkes is a punchy, fun right-hander, while Namotu Lefts offers a softer, more playful wall ideal for intermediate surfers, longboarders, or SUPs.

Castaway Island Resort has surfing excursions with minimum 3 people and maximum 8 people per trip. Wilkes Passage costs $150FJD/person while Cloudbreak is a cool $200/FJD/person. Castaway Island can also be reached for a day trip rather than stay though generally it is better to stay at least two nights if surfing is on the agenda.

2. The Coral Coast

Spanning the southern coastline of Viti Levu this region acts as a massive swell magnet. Because it faces directly south, it is highly exposed to the trade winds, meaning early morning sessions are crucial before the wind turns things choppy.

+ Frigates Passage: Often called the “Cloudbreak of the Coral Coast.” Located far out on a barrier reef, this powerful, walling left-hander handles massive swells and catches any bit of energy moving through the South Pacific.

+ Sigatoka Rivermouth: A rare exception to Fiji’s reef breaks. Located where the Sigatoka River meets the ocean near the famous sand dunes, it offers a heavy, shifting sand-bottom beach break that produces brown, moody, and powerful peaks.
